                                                                                                Washington D.C. June 23rd
 
                                                                                                Dear Father
                                                                                                            I received your letter of the 21st came to hand on the eve of the 22nd no 20th & 21st this morning we was inspected and had 18 pages of Army regulations & rules read to us then we went about two & a half miles see about 20 camps had a bath came back and all hands was packing up to start for Va. at 6 this eve so I have but little time to write. We met the 29th N.Y. Regt comeing into the 2nd Conn Regts ground one came last night they were rather scat they went to takeing prisoners they claim they took one that had secession papers in his pocket and that he deserted from Jeffs armey I think it may be bogus. I would give you some of the particulars about the man that was shot here accidently last week he was in Capt Lewis’es Co Hartford / his name is Richard Howard shot by Amasy S Colborn same Co not even the Co was allowed to escort him to the cars you likely have heard all about it now I should of written before about it but the Col gave different orders.
 
I hear that there is another Regt comes on our ground to morrow. The boys are making a great hurah about the 27th just marching inn with band. I hear now we go at 5 O’c I will write as soon as I get a chance no time to spare now you can direct as as before except
