Dear Mother
I rec’d your letter of the Dec 1st I was glad to hear from you I was particularly glad to hear that you were all well & that you had got that check that I sent home. I think I shall send home more next pay day about twenty dollars. I am sorry to hear that little Ella is sick I hope it will not amount to much. I am about as well as can be expected I wished I had sent home more money I could just as well as not but I thought I should need it but I dont actualy need only enough to by my writing utensils & my tobacco every thing / is provided by the govmt I believe the chaplain cannot get checks on Prov banks so I suppose you will have to pay the quarter the news is not very important. I hear we are going into winter quarters in barracks about a half a mile from here. everything goes on about the same dull times here I hear a large portoin portion of secceded Virginia is coming back into the Union again & that South Carolina has elected a union governer (read North for that South erased) and that the poor privates are getting tired of seccession rule and sigh for the good old days of the Union. so do I /
I have got plenty of clothing so that I shall have to throw away part of it if we move. I rec’d a letter from George Tren to day day before yesterday I rec’d one from Ardelia & one from Rosina. I am in hopes I shall get home by spring or summer we may possibly before but I dare not set the time before for fear I shall get mistaken I should like gooon go one my own hooks again and not be obliged to drill without I had a mind to I should like to see you all very much but dont get in hurry we shall be at home in good time no dout an almighty being presides over the destinies of men / as well as nations
give my love to the little brothers and sisters I possess [scratched out]
I have got to go on dress parade so I must bid you good bye from your affectionate son
Kingsley Martin
PS Excuse me for not writing more for I have not got any fire in my tent though some have
when we get into barracks I am in hopes we shall have it warmer and then I will write longer letters
K. Martin
