25 Sept Sta[?] [hole in paper] PM for the C river in [hole] [faded] Wilders Battery 2 [hole] 70 V.C Wolfords cavalry and 45 mou[?] inf marched out 9 miles bivoced at a late hour we have no tents nor our knapsacks
 
26 Sunday at an early hour we are on the march again chassing over a barren Chestnut soil. the dwellingss few & far between poor at best 1 school house & 1 church but one in them how often I thought of our Sabbath school at home. the day was the least like Sunday and a difficuld matter to keep my mind in a proper chanel marched through to somerset near the battle field of 2 weeks ago 20 miles from the last stoping place
 
27 at 10 A.M. Gen Carter passed us and by [?] by 1 pm we start on again passing Somerset in fine stile camping over Fishing Creek. there is a little improve in the soil of the land, though very uneaven we have plenty of good spring watter the weather is warm and showery
 
28 on we go twards Mill Springs through thick woods to an open field surrounde by woods say the rest of the day and night. whare 600 mounted [hole]ry [faint] the river [?] rebels fired [hole] to cross the river [?] in the [hole] night I had such a good letter from [hole] sending [?] some Nwss
 
29 We were marched back to somerset so that we can cross the river at another place to day we had a hard march in the rain and mud to night we make some shelters of rould [?]s found some straw on the whole we have good times sleep well march well very anxious to meat the rebels it is like going out of the war for we do not know what is going on no papers
 
30 the presidents fast-day I hope I shall hear that it is well observed in the North, agan (this is part of a diary
