Friend James
I was
glad to hear from you again it has been a long time since I heard from you. I am well as usual. we have had some hard knocks lately but every thing is working well for Sumpter is completely knocked to pieces but there is two forts this side that has got to be taken before our troops can occupy it they will soon have to come down there is every prospect of the fall of Charleston but it is a hard place & will take some time /

the rebs got some knocks last night our batteries was firing all night also the fleet they kept me awake all night it is a hard place to sleep here when they get mad & go in for a knock down & drag out We are within 800 yards of fort Wagoner charged on the rebels rifle pits the 27th capturing them & 75 prisoners. I was looking through a spy glass to day & could see the rebs on the observatory in the Courthouse in Charleston I think we will have a nearer view before many weeks. I have seen the list of drafted from R I but would like to have you / send a paper once in a while I will send you a New or free south if I can get them we can not get them always here I do not think I shall be as lucky as Charley Bourdon was I guess I shall have to stay until my time is out if the war does not end but I should like to come home. give my respects to your father & mother. & all the friends write as soon as you receive this I close as it is getting late good night

                                                                                    as ever yours
