Cyrus Waterman Remington was born on July 3, 1839, in Cranston, Rhode Island, to Sheffield Remington. His father worked as a laborer. Remington probably grew up in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, and by 1860, he was working as a laborer in a mill. He enlisted in the Union army on August 22, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery on October 5.
He spent the next two years stationed in South Carolina, and he fought in the First Battle of Fort Wagner. The army transferred him to Virginia in 1864, and he took part in the siege of Petersburg. He mustered out on June 9, 1865.
Remington returned to Rhode Island after the war, and he married Susan Jane Diamond on November 30, 1865. They had at least eight children: Ann, born around 1867; Mary Jane, born around 1869; Henry, born around 1873; Levi, born around 1875; Elvira, born around 1878; Abigail, born around 1883; Arthur, born around 1885; and Lucy, born around 1889.
By 1870, he was working as a carpenter in North Providence, Rhode Island. A decade later, the family was living in Cranston, Rhode Island. They finally moved to Johnston, Rhode Island, sometime in the early 1880s. He applied for a federal pension in May 1892 and eventually secured one. Remington died in Rhode Island on March 10, 1926.
