I have been sick and well I have been out on a twelve days scout since you wrote to me. I have been chilling a little for the last fiew days but have got them stoped a going the most of our boys is out on a scout now where thay ar the most of the time the rebels made a raid in on the railroad three or four days a go and captured eight companies of the 54 Ill infantery and tore up the r r / thay are all a round us a grate many thinkes thay will capture this place before long unles we get a new commander I hardley think thay can take it Steele is branded with being a tratar he acks very much like one whither he is or not. thay keepe the cavalry on the go here to keepe the rebels out of town. we drew five mont pay a fiew days a go but no bounty as it has been but a fiew days since I wrote to you I dont know whether it is necessary for me to write very much or not I want to tell you one thing I want you to tell me why you have took to writing such short letters it lookes to me as though you might lengthing them a little what do you think a bout it. the hundred a sixth has gone / to Pine Bluff that is down this river a bout fifty miles I should not wonder if thay had som fiting to do down thare the rebels is said to be in ten miles of that place in camped a prety strong force and the commander at that place is one of the best fiters thare is in the buisness. I will send you som huckle beries seede for you to try. plant them as soon as you get them and dont them on poor ground.
