Sabria J. Spargur was born in 1843 in Madison County, New York, to Edward and Anna Spargur. Her father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property by 1860. By 1860, the family was living in Taylor, New York. She married John A. Shepherd, and they had at least three children. They lived in Truxton, New York, and her husband worked as a blacksmith. In January 1896, she received an appointment as a local postmaster. Her husband died on January 10, 1906. She applied for a widow’s pension the following month, and she eventually secured one. By 1920, she was living in her daughter Ina’s household in Taylor, New York. She died sometime after 1920.
