In Front of Vicksburg Miss June 26th 1863
 
            Mr Philip Harter
                                                Dear sir inclosed you will finde one hundred Dollars please keepe it until Malvina Calls for it I ame well we have not got Vicksburg yet we blowed up one of them Forts yesterday and there was some desperate fighting our Regt was not engaged the fighting was done to the right of us but in full / view of us most of the time it was a hand to hand fight with Bayonets the fight did not stop until after night I have not learnt what was the result whether we gained any advantage or not there is desperate work done here almost evry day nearly all the time there is fighting going on from day and night the health of the Army is good I ame very tiard of this place but live in hopes that better times are close at hand. yours truly
