Reuben Haworth Jr. to Ann Haworth, 4 February 1862

Dear Mother
I suppose you will be quite surprised when you receive the Bible you gave me. I will tell you the reason, you know that a Soldier must have everything to occupy the smallest compass and the least weight. well the Chaplain has sent round his waiter with testaments, so I thought I would take a small testament and send you the Bible (as a little testament is a good deal less in weight and compass) I hope you will not be vexed with me. you will also be surprised too learn that we start for Ship-Island tomorrow or that is we go on board tomorrow that is the story round. I was quite surprised to see Father he came just in time to see me before we start. I could not help laughing to see Freddy walking along with the drummers when we were drilling he looked so funny. they say we are going to stop a Fortress Munroe then we are going right on to Ship Island I am in good spirits don’t fell home sick a bit. that cake was very acceptable and the rest of the stuff you sent me I had to give to Freddie as he would not go to the Salt junk an hard tack as we all it. am well and I hope when this letter reaches you you will be the same and all of you. I suppose this will be the last letter I shall write to you while I am in New England unless we stay longer  than we expected I do not think of much more to write so goodbye.

from your affectionate Son
