Reuben Haworth Jr. to Ann Haworth, 8 September 1862
Camp Parapet
Sept 8th 1862
Dear Mother
inclosed you will find my picture which I think is a very good one to-night I have received a letter from you which contains the letter from the Lane girls I thank them very much and shall answer at the quickest possible time I shall read the tract. I have sent you a paper and letter besides this in answer to the two previous ones you sent me. I have not much war news to write. the 15th Maine are going from here to Pensecola and the 15th New York coming in there place because they think that if there should be a fight they would be better they are the only New York Regt in the department of the Gulf. the rebels are not a great ways from here are the reports and if they try to do anything we will give them a few blue pills and a few Gun Boats. they can not take this place. the line of undertrenchments we are behind are six miles long with Lake Pontchartrain on one side and the Mississippi River on the other the Gun Boats will give them a razing on one side and the Gun Boats in the lake on the other besides the batteries and the regts along the breastwork so you will content yourself and don’t be arlarmed, for uncle Sam is rich enough to give us all a farm. the drummers are getting ready for roll call so I must bring my hasty letter to a premature close. give my love to everybody to the neighbors and all that picture has very nice view the commisary building the cannons, the sentinals, the broad Mississippi you will see the ports mouth and a steamer in fact I have not seen a better on you will not be vexed at the price 1.50cts. everything is so high out here you will notice that I look kind of cross well I could not help it. I had to pucker my mouth up so as to not burst out laughing I shall send you a few things by freman who I think will come home soon
from your affectionate son
