Dear Father

I commenced to write you this letter but there was so much joggling I could not write further. I received a letter from Mother dated 9th also. About my boots I am not so particular at Mr Kimball’s making them only if they are made well. I am glad you received my money. If mother wants a Cooking Stove you can do as you say and if more is wanted to get it I will help pay for it out of my next payment. I expect that the times are pretty hard up north, but I guess it can stand it as long as the South can. I am glad to see that So. Newmarket is doing so well I wonder what bounties it is giving. when we were at Franklin they issued an order to reenlist all those who wanted to in our regt but it does not work very well, the boys know too much for them as to get in an other such scrape. I am not in the Adjutants now but the Dr most always excuses me from duty. I have not got any horse yet. all I do is drill a little with the sabre. which I had rather do than lay still doing nothing. we are in a Cotton Press and a Col. commands us who is a perfect tyrant. our Col ranks him and because he wont be under him he is under arrest. If I was him I would do the same. he puts men in the guard house for having long hair. My lieut is Brigade Commisary and I am going to try to get the place as Clerk for him. I have spoken for the chance. I am a poor man on horse back I cant ride worth a cent. the Co was glad to see me back again and I was glad to get out of the miserable hospital. the news is pretty encouraging from the north and I am glad of it. we expect to stop here sometime for the purpose of drilling there are three regts of Cavalry here when they turn out they make a grand show. I do not think I shall see much more duty I cannot think of more to write. give my love to all.
