Reuben Haworth Jr. to Ann Haworth, 18 May 1864
St Louis Hosp N.O. May 18th 1864

Dear Mother
I have just received a letter from you and now I have a few spare moments before it is supper time so I will proceed to answer it. I am glad to see that you are all well. I am the same way. I commenced this letter on the eleventh and thought I would wait and see if I got one from you and at last I have got it and one from Father. he writes good news. It seems that you get letters faster than you can answer them. but as the saying is “the more the merrier” Uncle James has come home pretty soon after enlisting. I hope he well I would like to see him in his soldiers rig. I wish he would write to me, he probably has joined his Regt by this time. when you write again tell me how is family is getting along. I feel the same about Gen Banks as you do. but those I have told what you said the rumor was, say, that they wished Rosecrans would come here I wish he would to. Our Regt. never did like him. from the first when he took command here about staying at home I staid about long enough but when I speak about going to a foreign clime I mean that I shallnt stay around home, but try and do something for myself. I know you wont feel sorry for the advice you have given me. and I shall not be so either I hope. There was a Salute fired at the levee one morning in honor of the vote for the freedom from slavery in La. which was carried in favor of the removal of it from the State. I am having a tiptop time and enjoy myself finely and dont worry about me. I must close
