Ensign Legrand Dickson
Ensign Legrand Dickson was born on July 24, 1840, in Rose, New York, to John and Sophia Dickson. His father was a physician who owned $4,000 of real estate and $40,000 of personal property. He grew up and attended school in Rose, and his mother died around 1848. By the early 1860s, he was working as a clerk.

He enlisted in the Union army on September 18, 1862, and he mustered in as a corporal in the 26th New York Independent Light Artillery. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 8½ inches tall, with dark hair and grey eyes. He was reduced to the ranks in April 1863 for an unspecified offense. He was promoted to corporal in May 1864, but he was reduced to the ranks again that December. He mustered out on September 12, 1865.

Dickson returned to Rose after the war. He applied for a federal pension in August 1890 and eventually secured one. By 1900, he was working as a contractor and builder in Locke, New York. He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Bath, New York, in October 1914, and he died there on January 12, 1916.
