Eliza & Frank my health is vary good at preasent we have gon into camp for the summer hear we are two miles from tipado vilage & five miles from the Railrode thirty five miles from Neworleans I have got A misable penn I wrote in my other letter Before this the perticklers A Bout my close I sent Frank tow papers with the other letter Dated August 2. I have no news to write this time onley to let you know that I am A live But I should like to Be in old chenango to Day I have not heard A word from Brother Leonard sence you wrote to me when he was out to mothers funarl I would like to hear whither he was dead or A live I have not writen to him I have / A noughf to do & think of But I shall write Before long to him you must write how all of my friends git A long for I cant write to them all nor will I till tha write to me tha have more time to write than I do tell David Bixbey to write me A long letter how the folks git A long in his neighberhood proberly we shant do mutch more fighting this summer I hope not never A gain it Eaint vary pleasent I tell you wall I could write some puty toughf storyes But I will omit them now I would like to see horis wood vary mutch But I think it will Be A long time I drother Be in my place than his one feels the Best when he is with the Regement I do ma Be he will Be excange Before long I hope so /
 
Frank I will send you the Neworleans papers puty often now while we stay hear for we git them Every day now tha are five cents A pieace tha are Brought to ous on the camp ground By the news Boys from Neworleans I can Read them & then send them to you & you must send me the oxford times once & while in my letter I wrote A Bought my checks I heard tha are A gonter Be handed to the solgear to send home them self wall I dont trouble myself A Bout it as some of the solgears do tha are A fraid tha wount git them nor the pay on them it will Be all Right I aint A fraid of it not A tall the govement cant cheat ous out of our pay & Eny one is vary foorlish to think so or vary ignorant &c / vary cheap living hear I will give you A little sceatch of it Butter fifty A pound all melted Cheese forty cents A pound potatoes tenn cents A pound Eggs fifty cents A dozen tomatoes & onion in proportion so you can gudge for your self what it cost to live hear I have paid as high as three Dolars for smoking tobacker hear when I was at port hudson I paid that for it now I can git it for tenn cents A paper Near sutch as you git in oxford for four cents wall Franke Be A good Boy I will Be home some time or other if I live I think I shall see you in less than A year more tell sister to have corage that is the main stay through life good By to all this time write often Asa Holmes
