Edward A. Flewellen was born on September 17, 1819, in Warren County, Georgia. He attended Randolph Macon College and Jefferson Medical College, and by 1850, he was working as a doctor in Monroe County, Georgia. He moved to Upson County, Georgia, in the 1850s, and by 1860, he owned $25,000 of personal property.
In May 1861, he received an appointment as a surgeon in the 5th Georgia Infantry. In May 1863, he became medical director on the staff of General Braxton Bragg, and in August 1864, he became inspector of hospitals for the Army of Tennessee.
He returned to Upson County after the war and resumed his work as a doctor. He also served in the Georgia state legislature and in Georgia’s 1877 constitutional convention. The 1900 census listed him as a “capitalist.” He died in The Rock, Georgia, on December 10, 1910.
