            Dear Bro Jim
                                    This morning I will answer the letter I recd from you a few minutes ago It bore date of July 25th was written partly by Mother I have not written to you for some weeks the reason I did not know exactly where you were If you dont leave home till the 15th this will reach their before you leave This morning finds us at Morganzas landing yet and a better prospect of staying here than when first come. We have been here verry near 3 months ever since come off the Red River expedition /
 
We have been in camp longer here than anny other place that we have been I like this place as well as anny place we have ever been out of Ohio
 
We get rations plenty & mail pretty regular I get a letter once aweek from home get one from Brad & Ike now & then
 
I am not just with the Co now am on daily dutty guarding at the Division comisary There is 8 of us one on guard at a time wee draw our rations here & have a young Sambo to cook for us We draw Flour & get the baking to bake it into bread we get good bread There is 3 brigades here besides a lot of colord troops Batteries & Cavalry Our Corps is at Baltimore M.D. but dont think we will go their I think we will be / kept here to keep the river open We may get a trip to Mobile yet they are fighting it was reported it was taken but it is not Fort Ganes is taken with a lot of prisners cannon officers & a great many comisary stores also their gun boat Tennesee Our men have brought it to Orleans
 
News is good from Grant & Sherman Grant dug under & blowed up one of their forts at Petersburg & killed & buerried all of one South Carolina Regt but 12 I suppose you have heard all about it I knead not tell you anny news as you get it before we do We get Cincinnati papers [?] Chicago St Louis papers but they are pretty old before we get them we get Orleans news it [?] New York /
 
Well Mother as to that sheep buisness go ahead do as you like or think best J. W. Pullin has not come yet but are looking for him the next boat there is a boat dieu this eve think he will come on it
