Dear Mother
I write these few lines to you to let you know that I am still enjoying excellent health and I hope that this letter will find you enjoying the same blessing. You will no doubt be surprised at receiving a letter from me dating from this place when but 8 days ago we were 50 miles further down the valley but the reason of this is Jackson and his rebel army have gone over the mountains into Western Virginia so that this part of the Army has nothing to do just now and as we were too far away for provisions to reach us we have been drawn back to / this point and perhaps we may get back to Winchester as there is no use for us here because Jackson will not come back to this valley very soon Shields has gone across the Mountain at New Market. it is supposed that he goes to join Gen McDowell. there is no enemy in the valley except a few of Ashby’s Cavalry and we will soon get rid of them. While we lay at New Market on Friday last our Brigade was ordered to go across the Mountain though for what purpose I do not know. the distance across the Mountain was 10 miles. We stayed over there until Saturday afternoon and then marched back to our old camp. We lay in camp over Sunday until 3 Oclock / on Monday morning and then marched to the camp near Woodstoc[k] I seen the grave of Morgan Richards It is pretty near the place where he was drowned

The next morning (Tuesday) we started for Strasburg but when within 5 miles of the place we were ordered to halt so here we are encamped within 5 miles Strasburg we expect to move into town tomorrow
They are erecting fortifications at Strasburg to command the valley and perhaps our Regt will be among the troops left to guard the post but there are rumors that we will be sent to Washington to be in readiness to go wherever ordered. /

I wish you would write a little oftener as it is over 4 weeks since I have received any letters from home the last letter I got was dated the 14th of April so you see that I have been a long time without letters

Give my love to Sisters & Brothers and receive the same yourself from your aff Brt
