Camp Taylor June 6th 1862
Dear Mother I take the plasure of wrighting yow a few lines to let yow now that I am well at the presant Time & hoping when those few lines comes to hand they may find you oll in the same helth well mother we have bin provos guards in Huntsvill & the 10 ohio took oure plase & we have a good eal of guard to do here but there aint no danger here now but I dont think that we will never have no more fighting to do but the Rebles is at chatanooga there is a / bout 4 thousand there & we had some of devesion orderd out to goo up there we heard from them & they had a small fight with them & oure men cleand them ought but we have got a gun boat here on the Tennessee River & it goes up a round the River every day but they had a small figh the other day & they thron bum shells at evry house by the river & burnt it down & they went down to decartor & burnt the town down to ashes & they cetched 2 of ouer calvry & cild them in decator & that is the / reason that they burnt the town down well Mother they are a going to send evry man home that is over 34 years old but Mother I heard that Uncel hes has inlisted & gon & I heard that harson mot has gon & they was a going to guard prisners but they will get tird of guarding prisners for I now whot wought guarding is & no how hard it is Some times one man is put ought on guard & hast to stand oll night by him self but I heard that John irens was gon / but yow keep Johey home well Mother oll the Barnesvill Boys is well at the presant uncel dan Edson is pirty near well but mother Sam French got a letter & he sed that I wroght home that ben Strall was dead but if they want to now the strait of it he wosant there onley the left wing of oure regtment was in it & the right wosant there but he belongs to the wrigh wing & me the left wing but mother no more at presant direct to huntsvill Alabama in care of capt James H Wing Co B 3d ohio volenteers infantry direct in this way
