Milan Emmons to Caroline A. Fuller, 11 December 1862
Before Richmond Va.
Dec. 11th /62/
Dear Cousin Carrie
Your very kind and welcome letter of the 6th ult. was received this morning and read with plasure and this evening I thought I would answer it for there might not be another chance for a number of days we have been under arms the greater part of the time for the last three days expecting an attack. The rebs master thier forsces on our left but / so far there has been no fighting in that quarter worth mentioning but the Joneys made a charge on our right this morning and then as near as I can fine out they fell back to thier works. so I think the wust is over for this time. We had a gay time yesterday and this fore noon: it have been snowing and melts almost as soon as it striks the ground so that the mud is worse then it was when we took that plasure ride out: you know where: we ware orderd out after dinner to keep the rebs from flanking us on our right and stayd until after dark then came in with the order to sleep with boots and accurterment all on and two days rassons redy to fall in at a minutes notice. we fell in this morning at four oclock and move out on our right but came into camp again about ten oclock. we have been puting up winter quarters latley: the tents are built out of fine logs the size is eight nine feet eigh inches long & 6 ft. 8 inch wide & five feet high / & coverd with shelter tents. there is four men to each. I have got three parma boys in with me.
I am glad to hear that you are at home again where you wont have to work so hard you say you are going to school this winter I hope you and the school master will get along first rate I expeck he will fine a good many wet nights that he will go to your house because it is nearer. I wish you good luck I wish with you that this war would come to an end but we must wait pantenly until a higher pouer then us see fit to restore our nation to peace again Carrie: I did not expeck any thants for that album: you will fine the name of each poto on the back if you wish to know who they are I will scend a flower in this. I hope Sara will have a good time in Berea this winter I would like to have the same chance if it wasant for this war I would spend / a few years in school. I expeck Wesley enjoyed himself whiles on a furlough pretty well I am glad if he likes it soldiering. I hope Ira will get over the Meesels that is what Wm. Freman Dalis Moon & J. Buck died with. you think the folks have no hearts round there I dont know what you would think to see the boys doun here where they dont know what minutes they will be cauld to answer for their sins but the boys ought to have shame enough about them to behave them self whiles at meeting if no where els. The drums are beating tattoo and soon will be beating for lights out so I will bring this to a close. you must excuse the bad writing for the boys have been rasing ned so that it is almost imposable to write. Give my love to all not forgeting your Self. Write Soon.
From your Cousin
