Maryland Heights Md.
June 21st 1863
Dear Wife
We are in camp at this place waiting for a fight We came here one week ago to-morrow and have dug rifle pits and built one fort during the time. To day we heard heavy firing in the direction of Leesburg. Our forces under Gen Pleasonton are [?]ing the rebs at that place we have since heard. If we are attacked here the enemy must suffer severely. Our line of Battle is a mile in length and at each end and in the centre is a strong battery. Rifle pits / extend the entire length. During the past few days we have taken five rebel prisoners. I was on picket Friday night and was ordered into camp as the rebs were supposed to be after us It proved to be a false alarm. The rebels are too well posted to attack us now. I think I am well and have been so since I wrote. I havent heard from you since the letter that you sent to Martinsburg Write often and direct to Baltimore. I sent $8.00 and some things which you have got I hope. I sent by Almon Fargodorf We are on the old battle ground of Harper Ferry. If we have a fight I will do my best for my country. Ever Your Husband [?] Lavier
