Winfield Peters
Winfield Peters was born on July 8, 1841, in Baltimore, Maryland, to George and Sarah Peters. His father was a property agent who owned $6,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Baltimore, and by 1860, he was working as a clerk.

He enlisted in the Confederate army on July 16, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company H of the 1st Maryland Infantry. The regiment took part in General Thomas J. Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign, and Peters mustered out on June 18, 1862.

He returned to Baltimore after leaving the army, and he married Mary Girvin. Their son James was born around 1876. He worked as a bookkeeper, and by 1870, he owned $1,000 of personal property. By 1880, he was working as a “Fertilizer.” He was an active member of the United Confederate Veterans, and he was reportedly an “almost constant attendant at the reunions.” He died on July 18, 1918, in Baltimore, after suffering a “hermorrhage of the brain.”
