Stephen M. Thompson to Emma A. Griffin, 18 September 1863
Camp Gilmore Sept 18/63.

We can hear the National Salutes when they are fired at Ft. Monroe they sound like the rumbling of distant thunder. Good news this morning. Gen Naglee says I may go to Ft. Monroe next week. We live well here now—a part of the time on our expectations of what we will have next week.—and the rest of the time on sweet potatoes and cold water. My weight is now 165 lbs. (Feb 5. 1885.—I now weigh just 166 lbs—was weighed to day—Have gained one pound in 21 yrs 11 mos and 7 days!)

I send a kiss for cousin Nancy J—pass it over to L—, and tell him to administer it. I would like to see the performance. They were anything but dear friends. A lazy sort of day to day.                                                                                                             T.
