Stephen M. Thompson to Emma A. Griffin, 30 September 1863
Camp Gilmore Sept 30/63.—
“That was a monster big kiss, I sent in my last, to Nancie J.—the letter would hold but one of that size, so, of course, I had to be partial. I send two to you, in this, but have to square the corners of them, in order to squeeze them in. You’ll find the squeeze within also.—take it, whether you are a young bride or not.” This is nonsense enough. Now for facts. “Ive got the “shakes” so that my poor brains won’t come to time in order.”
“Havn’t had a shake before to day for eight months. I gave that one a settler—and this one will receive the same fate.” I visited Portsmouth, Norfolk and Fortress Monroe. Oct 2nd Evening. I will proceed. Hope you will like this picture of me. If it dont look cross enough, I will try again—even at the expense of the camera. I am very busy now-a-days.—
