Camp near Winchester
Dear Mother
I received your welcome letter this afternoon with the money in it also the package of letter paper & envilopes and tobacco. I was very glad to hear from you and know that you were all well at home as I had not heard from you for a good while. The letters that come from home now are 8 or 10 days in getting here while Lieut Wilsons trunk was only three days in coming I think that Lieut Wilson received a very nise present his clothes fit him first rate and set him off / very well. We are all well here at present. We have a first rate camping ground and everything clean and nise. I dont see so many Regts about here keep themselves as clean as the 46th does for instance the other day a great many of the boys were down by the road as Gen Shield’s Division was passing by and they asked us where we got our blacking Gen Shield with his Division and 30 forces of Artillery went away up to Strausburg a day or two ago and returned today. They went about ten miles further than Strasburg in pursuit of Jackson but he has retreated / and I suppose he has gone down towards Richmond so that we are now a good ways from the Rebel Army. The impression here is that we wont have much longer to serve Uncle Sam by the way things are working I think that we will all be home in a couple of months at most There is great cheering about town tonight at some news which we have heard though I dont know what it
