Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 2 March 1862
Wiliamsport March 2ond
Dear Mother
I write these few lines to let you know that I am well. All the boys are in good health. We received orders on Friday last to be ready at 3 Oclock on Saturday morning for a march. So we prepared ourselves and at 3 Oclock were roused up struck tents and sent them to Hancock to be brought here by the boats. Our knapsacks were carried by the wagons We started from Hancock at seven Oclock and reached here at half past four in the afternoon having traveled / twenty four miles. We are quartered in the same building that we were while here before. We expect to cross the River tomorrow there were a great many troops crossing here yesterday and today and the most of them have gone on to Martinsburg to join Gen Banks who I believe has crossed with the most of his Division down at Harpers Ferry. Our Regiment will have to guard the Provision train as we are the last to cross.
You must excuse the shortness of this as it is pretty hard to write in a place like this with two Companies in the same room /
Give my love to my Brothers & Sisters, to all inquiring friends and receive the same yourself from your affectionate Son
Daniel
Tell Sam & Dave to answer the letters I sent them /
