Dear Mother
I received your welcome letter this morning and was very glad to hear from you and to know that you were all in good health. I wrote to Dave this morning and gave him all the particulars of our march to Winchester so that I havent much news to give you now. you wrote about stockings, socks &c I dont need clothing of any kind at present as it is comencing to get warm and we are to get a different kind / of uniform from the kind we have at present They are to be given to us by the first week in April at any rate we have enough to last us for a good while. Yesterday just as we were entering Winchester we passed a House and I overheard a woman that was standing in the doorway say that those soldiers had good clothes. The people around here say that the secesh soldiers had very poor clothing, mostly homemade cloth. It was a good job for a great many citizens here that we came in at the time we did as every man was to be pressed into service / and even as it was the Rebel Army took about 100 Union men with them as prisoners. There is a great many Confedarate buried here. some died from sickness, while a great many others died from the effects of the cold last winter. the folks say that the march to Hancock and Romney was the ruination of Jackson’s Army. They had Regimints here from every southern state even from Maryland

I must close now as it is getting late and I want to have this ready for the mornings mail. We dont expect to get paid before April or May /
myself and all the boys are well

Give my love to all my Brothers & sisters & receive the same yourself

                                    from your affectionate
                                                Son
                                                            Daniel
