Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 16 November 1862
Camp of the 46th P.V
Maryland Heights Nov 16
Dear Mother
It is with great pleasure that I write these few lines to you to let you know that I am still enjoying good health. The box that you sent me reached Camp on Thursday but as I happened to be on picket on that day I did not see the contents until Friday. I was very glad at receiving the Shirts, Vest, Gloves, &c &c
Tell Mrs Houston that I thank her very much for the splendid Cake she sent me also to Lizzie Kinsey for the Apples. Tell Johnny that his walnuts were first rate and to whoever sent the tobacco & Segars tell him I will find use for them
We have settled down very quietly into Winter Quarters. everything is very dull & quiet around Md Heights & Harpers Ferry since the rest of the troops left. There are not troops here excepting Bank’s Old Corp. Maj Gen Slocum is now our Commander.
We have no news of any kind excepting a rumor once in a while of Jackson coming to attack the Ferry & more of the same stuff
Nothing more at present
Give my love to my Brothers & Sisters. to all inquiring Friends and receive a great deal yourself from your
Affectionate Son
Daniel
