Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 14 December 1862
Camp Mathews Dec 14th
Dear Mother
I just now received a letter from Dave and was very glad to know that you and the rest of the family were well. I am enjoying excelent health at present. We have very fine weather here and also a splendid Camping ground with a nice view of Fredirick and vicinity I would have had my likeness taken and sent home by Mr Hunt but he did not stay long enough to give me time to go to Fredirick and have it taken. another reason is that it is pretty hard to get a pass to go to Town. Morgan and I intend to go to town on Monday or Tuesday next and have our likenesses taken and sent home. Dave says that John Richards gave a very doleful account of our march / from Darnestown to this place. The reason of that I suppose is because John can find nothing else to write. for my part I dont think that it was a hard march although it went pretty did go middling hard on some that had new shoes. You know that we received new shoes just before we left Camp Knipe and it is a great deal easier to march in old shoes than new ones. Our Brigade was reviewed yesterday by Gen Banks. the place chosen for the review was a large field about a mile on the other side of Fredirick and about 4 1/2 miles from our Camp The people of Fredirick say that the 46th is the best looking Regiment that has passed through.
I have no more news to write at present Let Dave know that I received 3 letters & 4 or 5 Pictorials from him and tell / Henry that I received an envelope and about 6 lines in writing from him
no more at present
Give my love to my Brothers Sisters to all inquiring Friends & receive the same yourself
from your affectionate Son
Daniel
P.S I forgot to put the name of the Lady that knit the socks for me in Henrys letter so I will put it in this one that you may know who it was
