Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 26 December 1862
Camp Mathews Dec 26
Dear Mother
I would have written long before this but I was waiting for answers to the letters whi that I wrote last week. The box that Mrs Richards and you sent to Morgan and myself reached here this afternoon. I received Daves letter a little while after. We were very glad to see the many good things that you had sent us. Our mess had a good dinner yesterday on a Turkey that one of the boys had bought. since we got out of the wilderness at Muddy branch we get plenty of good things to eat We have fresh Bread almost every day in the week with butter at / 30 cts a pound, cheese at 20 cts & sausages & pudding at 12 & 14 cts so you can see that we are not going to starve. by the way Uncle Sam gave us all a Christmas present in the shape of a new dress Coat. tell Sam that if he wants to get a good fitting Coat here is the place. Morg & I intend to go to town tomorrow that is if we can get off and if we do go I will send my likness to you. It is pretty hard to get to town just now because every one wants to go and the Captain cant pass more than three in one day. I suppose that by this time you have heard of the execution of Lanahan the murderer of Major Lewis. He was hung on Monday afternoon at a half past / one Oclock in a large field close to our camp. His execution was witnessed by the 46th the 19th and 28th N. Y. Regts besides a great many citizens The 3rd Wisconsin Regt acted as guard
I have no time to write anything more at present but I will write again in a few days. Tell Henry that I received the piece of paper he sent me but I have no use for blotting paper at present
