Dear Brother
I arrived here yesterday but found very few of the men all that had horses and were well enough have gone to Gates Co N.C. to get corn and provissions those that had no horses about forty in the regt went on foot with a Virginia regt. The horses have fallen of a good deal since I left. my company had (3) three to die. I dont know how many have died in the regt. three died yesterday about twenty have died in the regt. one dead this morning. Those that have gone to N.C. get plenty Jolly has fallen off but I will / take him to N.C. to day. I heard cannon last night when I went to sleep and this morning when I awoke. they cannonade all night I believe. Longstreet has about thirty thousand men (supposed) about Suffolk but it is not surrounded nor Rail Road communication cut off he has a good many waggons hawling provissions they brought up a large quantity of bacon the boys say the depot is full. He has sent for more waggons. They have had some pretty heavy skirmishing I dont know how many have been killed and wounded I met a car full of wounded in weldon going on the Petersburg I will go down to the regt this morning. I came through without any trouble I left my boxes with Omark
Your affectionate brother
Alex
