John J. Miller to Mary E. Burd, 6 October 1863
                                                                        Johnson’s Island Near Sandusly Ohio
My Dear Friend,                                                                     Oct. the 6th 1863.

I received your kind letter this morning & was glad to learn that I was not forgotten, though, I should have liked much to have read the letters that were miscarried And my curiosity—that you succeeded so well in arousing—was all dispelled by your letter of to-day. I thought it was a marriage—of course—that you refered to but was not able to conjecture who? I thought once that it might possibly be Delle & Gene as I had heard so much lately of their devotion Well I’m glad Hattie & John have consented at last to link their destinis together, they have my best wishes for their future happiness. I should like very much to be present on that occasion, I know I should look with a great-deal of pleasure & pride upon that third figure (in white?) in the group of six. I shall console myself however with the belief that I shall not be forgotten on that occasion by one at least. Gov Polk arrived here last night. I called to see him this morning; he looks quite well though he had grown so grey since I saw him last that I scarcely recognized him; he tells me that Cornelia did not get to see nor even hear from her mother or sisters; he left Mrs P. sick at Helena. The Gov has a room next to mine & I suppose he will take a particular intrest in “keeping me straight” but you know that that will not be necessary. My opinion concerning the exchange I am sorry to say was premature We hear so many rumors on that subject that we never know when to rely upon them. It is getting quite dark so I will close. Write soon!

My love to all out at “Oakland Home” & with sincere love & affection for your self I remain your true friend
