Mary Elizabeth Burd
Mary Elizabeth Burd was born on August 9, 1843, in Missouri to John and Eliza Burd. Her father was a farmer who owned $50,000 of real estate and $9,400 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in St. Louis, Missouri. John J. Miller began courting her in the early 1860s, and they corresponded throughout the Civil War.
 
They got married on December 28, 1865, and they had at least three children: Richard, born around 1867; Mary, born around 1870; and Clara, born around 1878. Miller worked as a physician. They lived in St. Louis, and her husband worked as a physician. By 1870, they owned $6,500 of real estate and $700 of personal property, and they employed at least one white domestic servant. They remained in St. Louis for the rest of their lives. Her husband died on September 17, 1920, and she passed away on February 2, 1925.
