John J. Miller to Mary E. Burd, 16 April 1864
No 27.
Johnson's Island, Lake Erie.
April 16th 1864
My Dear Little Friend, In my last, I promised to bother you quite frequently with my scrawls while you are sick, but as you are incline to "Homoeopathy", I might infer, that you woud prefer your "physic" in even smaller & less frequent doses, however, you will please pardon me if I refuse to deviate from the course of the "regular profession". Seriously—I sincerely trust that by the time this reaches you, you will have no further use for "horrid drugs". Please say to "Aunty" that she could confer no greater boon—I care not what it is—none that I would prefer on earth, to the one she proffered me in your last; yet, for the happiness—in the end—of all, I would wait, yet a little while longer. Something whispers to me, that you "fully appreciate my motives." I am so glad to learn that Alice is expected home soon; she will be so "much company" for you & besides, you will not miss so much(?), that absent friend, I sometimes hear of. And you are not devoting much of your time now to music? My friend "Hartz"—Asa—has a very fine toned guitar & I think that if I was only fond of following the advice I like so well to give, I would soon become a very "good performer." Has Lelia H. returned to St. L.? Ive heard nothing from her for 2 or 3 months. Remember me very kindly to all at "Oakland". Cheer up! & get well; you cannot imagine how deeply I sympathize with you. Let me hear from you soon. Believe me I shall ever remain your sincere & devoted friend.
J. J. Miller
