My Dear Little Friend,
To my great relief & pleasure your "long looked for come at last" this evening and trusting that you will not treat me so ceremoniously again, I reply with my usual promptness, not-with-standing I've written 5 times—with this—since your's of the 19th ult. I am afraid your sensitive nature has led you to appropriate some of my remarks, which were intended by no means as your property; I have no idea of the remark you refered to, but I'm confident of one thing, and that is, if the remark was in any-wise calculated to wound, it was by no means intended for you. I regret that I did not receive the paper you sent me, containing the death account of my friend Tunstall. I learned through Delle of his death—with deep regrets & requested her to send me the paper containing the notice; I've not yet recd it. I also regreted to learn of the death of Mr D—; surely the family has been sorely afflicted. I was so pleased with your reply in regard to the picture—the justness of it I mean & your Christianly adherence to the "Golden Rule"—that I utterly failed to feel in the least bit disappointed in not receiving the picture. After making the request of you, I somewhat doubted the propriety of it, so I shall now resign the "Col" to your advice & let him get his own pictures. I wrote to you a few days ago enclosing 2 rings—for Nannie & Clara. I hope they have recd them. Love to all out at Oakland. And write soon to your ever true friend
