John J. Miller to Mary E. Burd, 30 June 1861
Fayette, Mo.
June the 30th 1861.

My Dear "Mary",
Perhaps you may have been somewhat uneasy about me, if so, allow me to inform you of my safe arrival. I have but a few minutes to write and shall have to be very brief. I arrived at Glasgow some 3 or 4 days ago but being constantly "on the go" could not find an opportunity to write to you. I was very much disappointed in not meeting Richard up here and also my not being able to carry out the objects of my trip—I suppose you know the reasons why. I expect to remain up in this part of the country for some 3 or 4 weeks / until something more favorable presents itself. I start for Mexico in a few minutes (the reason of my great haste in writing) where I shall remain a few weeks and will have "plenty to do" from there I do not yet know where I will go probably I shall come home if nothing of usefulness can be done. I should like to give you an account of my trip but shall have to defer it for the present as also a good many other things in "these times". I have a sixty miles ride before me to day so I know you will excuse me for not writing more. I shall write again soon. One of the dearest of little cousins sends her best love to you. I would love to write / more to you if I could. I would give anything in reason to see you. Give my love to Alice and tell to write to me and let me have the "latest news". I must close.

"Mary" wont you answer this?

You know how dearly I would love to hear from you.

My address for the present

will be Mexico. Andrain Co. Mo.

With all the love of a true
                                                                        and devoted heart I remain
                                                                                    ever Yours.
                                                                                                Johnnie.
