My Bro & Sister!
Under a faint hope that you will see this “after many days” I cast this morsel upon the turbid tide of events. I got here this morning before day having ridden 30 miles by 4 o’clock to Brandon in time for the Carrs & come on to this place during the night. I was so tired & sleepy I concluded to stop here to-day (Sunday)—get up some provisions—provender, a bucket to water my Horses.—I start at day light in the morning.

My horses stood the trip splendidly, specialy Delia who improved daily—The first day we rode 28 ms 2d 32 ms 3d day 35 ms & yesterday / 30 ms

I have been unable to see a paper with a list of the killed & wounded of my Regt. but I hear from several sources that our loss was immense. One young man who was wounded in the foot & whom I saw this morning in the Hospital, he belongs to my Regt. He told me we went into the fight with 380 men & came out with 150—others state our loss in killed & wounded at 150. The Major (Butler) was killed upon the field beside several other officers & many men. The Lt. Col. the Adjutant & many others wounded—

Ben & Wes escaped Another great fight is imminent at Chattanooga /

                                                                                                Care Capt Harden

I still keep well & I expect in the course of a month to test my luck or fate in the waterloo of this revolution. Both sides are reinforcing—

Thanking you both for your kindness & sending my best love to you all I am

                                    Very truly Your Brother
                                                            Winans—
