and friends it is with pleashure that I take my pen in hand to let you know how I am getting a long at this time this leaves me in rather poor health I have had a slite brush of the fevor I have got the diarie now but I hope when this comes to hand it will find you enjoying good health /
 
January the 17.1863
now will try to finish my letter when I commensed to write it raind so heard that it come through our tent so that I could not write very well. last Sunday we had a big fight at Arkansas post cald fort hineman we took every thing they had and between 1,000 to 3000 prisinors. oh it was a heard site to go over the battle field our gun Boats knocked the fort all to pieces and now we are come doun to the mouth of Ark River to day and the fleet is laying here now and I dont know wheter they are going doun to Vigsburg again or not I hope they / will take us north again till we get well for half of the Regt is sick now. I wish I could get some thing good to eat once more I know if I was at home I would have plenty of good and holesom vittels for we have been on the Boats for the last four weeks and have no chance to cook anything but make alittle coffee and the ballance is hard crackers and old Baken of old barnys first killing oh how I wish I could eat with you once more and get fresh soshage and good Bread and Butter I am not rite well yet but I hope by the time this comes to hand I will be well /
 
we had the higest snow here this week that was knowen to be here for the last ten years and it set in making cold on us for it was very warm last Sunday and monday me and Billy Cox went out got us a mess of greens and it was the best I had cinse I left memphis well I must sclose for this by say to you to write soon I got aletter from Ann and I was to receve it I hope to meet you all some day if not in this world I want to meet you all in heaven where parting will be no moor your affectionate Brother R G Quickl
