In Camp near Vicksburg on the Louisanna
Side. January the 24th/63
 
Dear Brother & Sister
I seat myself to write a few lines to let you know how I am getting a long I am still getting better, and I hope when these few lines comes to hand they will finde you all well. last night I was out on picket and is very warm here now so that we can set out in our shirt sleaves and swet I think we will get into a fight afore long for we have orders to hold ourselves in readyness at a moments notice for the have commencd to fight, but we are on the oposid sides of the River. yester day one of the Rebbles gunboats come up to / to shell our men but some of our Artillrey put some shell through her and she had to get up and skedaddle
 
but I hope we will meet with sucsese this time but trust that in the lord that he will take care of us in time of trubble. I wish I could be with you a few days once more but I cant for I am a great ways of from home. I don’t know but that we will get home agane by spring I wish it was the lords will that this war would close for those that is at home dont know anything a bout heard times for we are put on half rations / now and them midling heard we have to bake Slapjacks and I dont like them very well. I would rather eat the Ironclad crackers I could get them. Brother Jacob I want you to sent me a bout one dollars worth of poast post tage stamps for I cant get them here for I am a bout out of money at present for I dont know when we will draw againe well I must close for this time but remain your sincere and Afectionate Brother
