New retreat April 19th 1862
Dear neice and nephew I now avail myself of this oppertunity of writing to you to let you kow that I and my family are all well thank you and I hope this will find you all enjoying the same blessing we are now at your Fathers I am sorry to communicate to you the sad intelligence that your Brother Albert is dead he died in the hospittle at Nashville of intermittent feaver he died on the 1st of April they received a letter from James yesterday he did not know till 11th that Albert was dead your Father started to Nashville yesterday to fetch him home he expects to / to be back by teusday James said he was buried there your Father and Mother and brothers and sisters and all are quite well your Mother appears allmost broken hearted about Albert they all seem verry much hurt with this bereivement but while we cannot help sorrowing we mist not sorow as those wich have no hope concerning those that are asleep for we beleive that all that die in Christ shall God bring with him we feel when we look back on his past life as far I was acquainted with him it was of the best charicter and as far as I can learn from his comarades / he was a good soldier not only to his country but also of the cross your Mother says she will write next week James said in his letter that he was well and hearty and encamped on duck river near Columbia the 38th reg Ind was not in the battle at Pittsburg Landing the detaild to gaurd along the railroad their company was gaurding the comisary stores we have a great deal of rain nearly every other week whiles I am writing it is raining very fast you talk of comeing in next fall I hope you will be able to come and see us at the same time a /
we think that the winter is broke up now the winter has been very wet and verry mild the wheat and grass is looking well the oats are generally sown on the dry land but on the wet land there is many not sowd we have moved in to our new house ever since November we have a good large house and verry convenient but it was a great deal of work I must now conclude with kind love to you I remain with due friendship your Uncle Frederick Batt write as soon as you can address me at Salem W C
