Frederick Batt was born around 1819 in England. He immigrated to America by the 1840s and settled in Vernon, Indiana. He married Ann Forder, and they had at least five children: William, born around 1846; Caroline, born around 1850; Mary, born around 1853; Walter, born around 1857; and Celia, born around 1860. They moved to Jefferson, Indiana, in the 1850s. He worked as a farmer, and by 1860, he owned $2,600 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. A decade later, their wealth had grown to $4,800 of real estate and $900 of personal property. He died around 1887.
