                                                                                                                        Dear parents
it is with plesure that I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and I hope that those few lines ma find you all well and doing well
 
well I havent mutch to rite as we dont git enney nues and if we did you would no as mutch as I would what the armeys was doing I can onley tell what is going on a long the river we ar runing nerley all the time up and down the river the last time we was down to decater we had two artillerey fites with the rebs tha fierd in to us as we went down and killed won of our boys / then the next day tha planted three peaces on the bank in the brush and wated til we got rite in rang and then tha opend on us but dun no harm the way tha had ther peaces planted was won just in frunt of us and won even with the bow of the boat and the other just in the rear of the sturn of the boat So you can see that we was in klose quarters to git out safe ther furthest gun was not over three hundred yards from us but you ma recken that we made it warm for them a round ther guns we made it so warm for them that could not hit our boat and we then got back alright we then went part of the way back and capturd 85 bales of cotton / and 10 horses and three muels and five prisners two of the latter died be fore we got them on the boat tha was bush whackers and you no what I mean bi them dien so soon after tha was captured
 
well I believ that I hav riten all I no to rite at present I got a letter from Julia to day She was well at that time
