William Coleman to Mary A. Coleman, 27 April 1863
Camp Near Franklin
April 27th 1863
My Dear Mother
I have just learned that Sylvanus McNinch leaves for home this morning, and hasten to write you a short note. I returned from the Regt on yesterday. The boys with few exceptions are doing finely. They have had a pretty tough time for two weeks past, plenty of work & plenty Yankee balls. Our troops have killed a good many of the birds. Genl Pickett had a skirmish with them on Friday and killed some 60 with loss on his part of 1 killed & 6 wounded.
I suppose you have heard of the death of poor Bob Crawford of Lancaster. he was killed a few days since by a piece of shell striking him on the neck. his loss is lamented by all who knew him. We have lossed none in the 6th as yet John Elliott is not well though he remains with the Regt. My health is very good I will write again in a day or two. excuse this. My love to all
Affectionately Your son
