august the 23 1863 Camp at lees mills on the rapperhannock virginia Dear sister i now take my pen in hand to let you no that i am well and i hope this will find you the same i got a letter from home last nite and they was al well i haint nothing to rite about the war it is al still times here now they aint a fiting eny here now where we are But they are fiting down to Maris island and fort sumter and fort wagoner we have got guns that caryes a bol that wais six hundred pounds they are agoin to try them forts with they think the / the South will have to give up before long they are runing away every day they think that peas will be decleard les then 3 months the rebs are runing away hul Companys to time i doant see how they are agoin to fite much longer they are runing away so and the damd yankeys are giving the happy hel on al sides i doant bleave we will see eny fiting i ges i will git home to make shuger next spring i hope his damd niger war wont last much longer if i once git out of the harnis they doant git me again i am Cooking now i was glad to git out / of the ranks it takes to of us to Cook for our company i am having an easy time now i cant think of much more to rite this time when you rite send a stamp and envelope and a sheet of paper for it is hard giting them here i cant think of eny more to rite this time so i will close for this time by saying good By rite as soon as you can this is from your Brother George Camp to Mary Camp
