i now take my pen in hand to let you no i am well and i hope this will find you the same we have ben marchen for to weeks so i haint had time to rite we left poolsvill and marcht to harpers fery it raind al the way it was forty miles there we staid there three days then we had to start of in a heavy rain and marcht to jeferson twenty miles we staid there one nite then we started for fredrick city we staid there one nite then we had orders to go of to fredrick junction we staid there three days then we had orders to march to Midle town we marched all nite it rained hard al nite we staid there to nites and this morning we started and marched till noon and we / have got our tent up on the old South Mountain battle feild and where we shall go to next i doant no i see nine hundred rebels to day that our men had and was marching them on to Washington tel uncle orrick if he had staid out here til now he would no alittle something about solgerin Myron Montgomery had a letter from home and that is the first i had hurd about albert bein dead the rebs are about gon up the news has come in that there is 14 hundred more rebels coming along here to morro and we have got to go to fredrick city with them i cant think if much more war news i rote a letter to you when i was to poolsvill and i rote for / some money it has ben so long sence i had a letter from you i begin to think that you haint got my letter yet i want you shold send me six dolars if you have sent that five dolar i sent for in the letter before this it is lost for we have lost one male i ges we doant have rashens enough on these long marches we have to by half of our livin to git along eny way deacent if i was in vermont and was giting twenty dolars a month i would have enoug to eat and i will here if it takes al i can earn
 
Mar you tel john r gates i want some more mone if you want eny git it so send me six dolars as soon as you git this i cant think of / eny more you can al read this rite as soon as you git this so good By
