Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 8 January 1862
Williamsport Jan 8th 1862
Dear Mother
I suppose you have been expecting a letter from me before this but I have been pretty busy for a week or more. on Wednesday & Thursday last we were engaged in fixing up our tent & putting up a fireplace in it. we had made it warm and comfortable and had expected to enjoy ourselves in it. for a while at least. but we slipped up on our calculations for on sunday evening just after our Company with 4 other Companys had returned from Frederick City where we had been to Church we received orders to prepare for a two days march so we got / everything ready but did not start until 5 Oclock on Monday morning. Our knapsacks were hauled by the wagons which made the march a great deal easier. We reached Hagerstown about 5 Oclock in the evening and our Comp with Co A. Co B & co F were quartered in the courthouse. we had a first rate place to sleep. our Mess slept in the court room alongside of one of the heaters. The Citizens of the place supplied us with hot coffee for supper and breakfast. We staid there until 10 Oclock the next day and then started for this place and reached here about 7 Oclock. We are now quartered in a warehouse by the side of the canal. co A & B are quartered upstairs and C and D on the ground floor / The rest of the Regiment have taken quarters in the building. on either side of us. The rest of the Brigade have gone on to Hancock but I believe we are to stay here. the Canal is frozen over so that if we had skates we could enjoy ourselves pretty well. The Marylanders are enjoying themselves sleighriding. I suppose they intend to enjoy it while they can as there is only about 4 inches of snow on the ground.
I must close this letter as it is almost time for the mails to leave D D
Give my love to Brothers & sisters Mrs Richards & Family and to all inquiring friends and receive the same yourself
from your affectionate Son
Daniel Davis /
PS All the Catasauqua boys are well. tell Mary that I will answer her letter as soon as we get settled down
