Daniel Davis to Margaret Davis, 24 January 1862
Camp near Stafford. C.H.
Jan 24th 1862
Dear Mother
I take this opportunity of writing to let you know where we are at present and also to let you know that I am well I had a letter written to you on the day before we left Fairfax with the money enclosed but we had marching orders before I could get it off so that I had to wait until the march was over. We left Fairfax on Monday and reached here last evening We had a great deal of trouble in getting along on account of bad roads made worse by a very hard rain storm. our Brigade / was in the advance so that we had not quite as hard a time in getting through as the rest Geary's Division will hardly get through for three days yet
we passed through Dumfries on Tuesday evening. I expected to see a pretty nice country town but there was nothing but an old Court House a jail and two or three old Houses.
Stafford has about the same appearance as Dumfries
Gen Sigel has his headquarters hear his troops are scattered between Stafford & the Landing.
I intend to go through some of his Camps to see whether I can find William Jones as I have heard that he is in the 133rd Pa /
I have not time to write more as the man that is to take this is waiting for it
Give my love to Brothers & Sisters & receive the same yourself from your aff
Son
Dan
