Dear Mother
It is with great pleasure that I take this opertunity of writing to you in answer to your letter & the parcels which came yesterday in Lieut Matchett's box.
by it I received the package of newspapers, writing paper & yarn the box of eatables which we received last week and of which I wrote to Dave was all spoiled
We have very changeable weather down here. since we came here we have not had many pleasant days. rain, snow & mud almost all the time are not so very agreeable /
we have not much duty to at present and as we have good log huts built we consider ourselves pretty well off
Since Gen Hooker issued his order to provide better rations for the soldiers we live pretty well so far as eating is concerned. every week we have 3 or 4 days rations of Bread or Flour Potatoes Onions & Fresh Meat issued to us
I heard from Bill Jones a few days ago by one of our boys at that time he was well & hearty
I received a letter a few days ago from Dave but as I had just written I thought I would wait for an answer to it before writing to him again. I will write to him in a day or two /
You must excuse the shortness of this letter. to make up for it I will write soon again

Give my love to Sisters & Brothers and receive my love to you from your
affectionate Son
