Dear Mother, Bro's & Sisters
I take this oppertunity to write a few lines to you to let you know that I am well When I last wrote to you we were at Cassville. We stayed there three days to rest and draw rations on Monday last we started forward again. our Corp was in the advance Geary's Division on this road and our Div. on a road to the right on Wednesday at noon Geary met the Rebels and had a sharp fight but they being in too great force for him we were ordered to come to his support which we did, marching here at four Oclock our whole Division / immediately formed in line of Battle and moved to the attack. our Regiment got up to within 150 yds of the Rebel Breastworks when they opened fire on us from their Batteries with Grape Shot and Shell. we were ordered to lie down in line and done so. the Grape whizzed over our heads but the shells bursting above us the pieces flew in all directions one piece scraped me on the back and killed two men behind me besides wounding several others. we lay under fire for two hours and a half when we were relieved by another Regiment who took our place while we were sent back to rest for the night. our lines in front are just where our Division fought neither party have lost or gained anything for the last four days. there has not been any heavy fighting since we were engaged though there has been heavy skir- / mishing and even as I write the firing is going on. We have'nt been half an hour since wednesday without hearing the report of a gun. I dont think there will be much more heavy fighting in front of our Corps as the Rebs are too strongly fortified to think of driving them. the work will be done on the right and left of us if done at all. I havent time to write much more but I wish you would try and write a little oftener. I havent received a letter from you for a long while we only have a chance to write once in a while and very little time to do it then we are in want of nothing but Tobacco and that is very hard to get I wont go into particulars until this Campaign is over and we get into camp if we are lucky enough to get through. Tell Johnny Moors folks that he is well. All the boys that you are acquainted with are safe. you would not know the names of our killed and wounded if I should give them. We had three killed and seven wounded in Co. C. the Regt lost over 100 / killed & wounded the Regiment lost at Resaca two weeks ago. today 40 men killed & wounded

Nothing more at present

Give my love to all
                        Your's afftely
