Friend Ed
Your letter came to hand the other day & if I dont get baked before I get through I will now try & answer it it is warm enough here to bake eggs most any place one of our little shelter tents if there aint plenty of shade around it isent any more protection from the sun than nothing in the world & if a fellow can sit under one of them long enough / to write a letter he is doeing darnd well today is sunday & some of the boys have gone out to divine service as they call it I thought I could improve my time better in writeing letters than I could in goeing to hear a chaplain that would light out as soon as he heard a shell whistle like he did but I dont believe he will do it again for every time he passes one of the boys they will throw it in his face light out hit him with a brick & all such phrases so I guess it has about cured him he came to us while we wer at Dumfries he claims that he came here to do us good & help us bear our burthens the next hard march we have to / go on if he will take hold & carry my knapsack a ways I shall think he is bearing my burden but not before
we received those tracts that came from the Austinburg society but the boys are getting so reckless that they dont care much about them they make a very good strike & that is about all you said you supposed things wer more forward here than they was there you would think so if you was here there aint but 2 or 3 familes any where around here & they live off from the government if they get a little garden spot planted they think they are doeing well fences are entirely out of the question & the land is run over so much that it is / as bear as a pine [?] but I dont know as I can pity them much if they hadent been secesh this property would have been taken care of but I must close for I have got to go on inspection in ten minutes
give my best wishes to all the boys & write soon no more at preasent from your ever true
friend Edgar
