Edgar Orlando Miller was born around 1846 in Ohio to Beneville Miller and Elizabeth Poorman. His father was a farmer and his mother was a “tailoress,” and the family owned $900 of real estate and $314 of personal property in 1860. The family lived in Geneva, Ohio, until the 1850s, when they moved to Austinburg, Ohio.
Miller enlisted in the Union army on August 26, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 29th Ohio Infantry on September 7. He probably lied about his age, as his enlistment records state that he was 18 years old. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded in the left shoulder at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, and he might have mustered out soon afterward. He enlisted again on February 3, 1865, and mustered in as a sergeant in Company K of the 196th Ohio Infantry on March 25. He was promoted to sergeant major on July 18, 1865, and he mustered out in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 11, 1865.
Miller returned to his parents’ household in Austinburg after leaving the army, and he earned a living as a railroad station agent. He married Nettie Manchester around 1870, and they had at least four children: Benton, born around 1870; Maud, born around 1874; Max, born around 1876; and Raymond, born around 1879. They lived in Morgan, Ohio, until the 1880s, when they moved to Park City, Montana. Miller applied for a federal pension in May 1889 and eventually secured one. They returned to Morgan, Ohio, sometime in the 1890s, and Miller worked as a farmer there. He died around 1906.
